Islands in the Grain

I trace my fingers through the blackened skyAnd hop between these islands in the grain,Then in each port I rest one reddened eye,Yet find no cheap relief for my neck pain.

So, half-awake, I stumble to my gateAnd shuffle through the cabin to my seat; Now, half-asleep, I close my eyes and waitFor solid ground to reembrace my feet.

And though I've been deprived of food and sleep,I know that I will take a thousand flightsAnd lose three thousand hours just to keepYou held within my arms another night.

But, tickets in my hand at break of day,I wonder why I don't just quit and stay.
