The Cattle-Theft Charm

Old English, Metrical Charms 5 and 10

When you find all your cattle gone say this before all else:"Old Bethlem was the borough known for bearing our Lord Christ,it is for miracles admired throughout middle-earth,So may this deed among all men be heard and known. Amen."Then thrice you'll pray facing the east then thrice you quote these words:"Please holy cross of our Lord Christ bring them back from the east."Then face the west and thrice you quote: "bring them back from the west."Then face the south and thrice you quote: "bring them back from the south."Then face the north and thrice you quote: "the cross was hid and found."The Jews hanged Christ, then did their worst, and hid what can't be hid,So may this deed never be hid, by Christ's own holy Rood.
